Why give chocolate on Valentine’s Day? Buy chocolate online today!
Valentine’s Day is the day to celebrate everything “love”.
It’s a day for romantic candlelit dinners, red wine, roses, and of course, chocolates!
Chocolate truly is the lolly of love. But how did it get that way?
And more importantly, where you can you buy chocolate online to surprise that special someone… without breaking the bank?
Today, we’ll be answering both of these questions!
The surprising origins of Valentine’s Day
Who on earth is this mysterious Valentine anyway? The answer may surprise you!
Valentine was a Christian who practiced in Rome in the 3rd century – not exactly the friendliest period of history towards Christians.
Needless to say, this landed him in trouble with the Romans, who (as they had a habit of doing) executed him on the 14th of February, 270AD.
Following Rome’s conversion, Valentine was made a saint, with February 14th declared Saint Valentine’s Day (unfortunately, lollies hadn’t been invented yet so celebrants sadly had to make do with other food instead!)
That’s a great story, but how did we get from celebrating a martyrdom to celebrating love and relationships?
Here’s the thing – in addition to being the date of Saint Valentine’s execution, mid-February (the 15th, to be exact) also happened to contain a pagan ritual celebrating fertility.
According to some historians, the lines grew muddled over time as gradually the two celebrations merged into one mega-day: what we now know as Valentine’s Day.
And there you have it!
Okay, but why do we give out chocolates on Valentine’s Day?
After all, when Valentine’s Day was first declared, chocolate wouldn’t be seen in Europe for another thousand years.
Could it be the surprising benefits of the chocolate? Or the irresistible taste?
While both of these sound plausible, as it turns out, it’s neither – in truth, the real reason is a lot more straightforward!
Couples have always sent gifts to each other – the bigger and more elaborate, the better.
And until the early 1800s, chocolate was a luxury item, available only to the ultra-wealthy.
While this meant that being a chocoholic expensive, it also made chocolate the perfect gift for those who wanted an extravagant gift for their Valentine!
A creative marketing campaign by Richard Cadbury (yes, that Cadbury) strengthened this link, and also gave us the now ubiquitous heart-shaped boxes.
In fact, even after new techniques made chocolate available to the masses, the link between chocolate and Valentine’s Day stuck.
Valentine’s Day chocolate
When we think of Valentine’s Day chocolate, most of us think of the iconic heart-shaped box and a bunch of red roses.
While there’s nothing wrong with the traditional choco box, you aren’t always going to find what you’re looking for at your local supermarket!
After all, your relationship is unique – you shouldn’t have to settle for whatever’s available.
For something that accounts for your Valentine’s unique taste and personality, DIY is the only way to go. Not only do you get to choose flavours they actually like, but it’ll also have way more meaning than a store-bought box.
Of course, you’ll need somewhere to buy those chocolates!
