Our 6 favourite lolly movies (and what lollies pair best with them!)

The only thing sweeter than snacking on your favourite lollies? Gorging yourself on lollies while watching one of your favourite movies!

Sure, the cinemas may not be open at the moment – however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have your very own movie night at home.

And unlike going down to your local multiplex, here you don’t need to worry about crinkling wrappers and people talking behind you.

Best of all, there’s nobody at the gate checking your bag for food and forcing you to buy overpriced concession stand lollies – you can bring in as many lollies as you want into your movie!

Need something to pass the time? We suggest:

  1. Buying lollies online
  2. Choosing one of the movies below
  3. Getting comfy and cosy with the family next Saturday night!

Our favourite lolly-themed movies

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

  • Where to watch it: Google Play, YouTube, Apple TV
  • Best lollies to eat while watching: chocolate, sours, gobstoppers

“Come with me, and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination…”

Whimsical, fun and colourful, this adaptation of the class Roald Dahl book is the ultimate lolly themed movie – it takes place in a magic lolly factory, after all!

It isn’t all sweets, however – behind all the wacky colours and musical numbers is a classic rags-to-riches story that just about anyone can get behind.

And in keeping with the zany onscreen antics, we recommend filling your lolly bowl with the most out-there lollies possible like fizzy Chupa Chups, sour lollies or novelty lollies like Wizz Fizz.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

  • Where to watch it: Google Play, YouTube, Apple TV, Stan
  • Best lollies to eat while watching: chocolate, sours, gobstoppers

Imagine Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, except coated with the trademark Tim Burton and Johnny Depp weirdness, and you get the 2005 remake of the 1971 classic.

In addition to the story of Charlie Bucket, the 2005 version also adds a touching subplot involving the titular Willy Wonka reconnecting with his estranged father.

As with the original, the same advice goes: the wackier the lollies, the better!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

  • Where to watch it: Apple TV, Netflix, YouTube
  • Best lollies to eat while watching: Trolli novelty lollies

Okay, so most of the food in this story aren’t lollies – that said, this movie’s character and colourful visuals make it the perfect film complement to all those lollies you’ve bought online.

Following a disastrous science experiment that turns the weather into food (it’s a long story), mad scientist Flint and weather reporter Sam have to work together to find a way to restore things to normal before disaster can strike.

Of course, it isn’t just chocolate rain and marshmallow tornadoes that have starring roles in this movie – gummi bears and jellybeans (or at least, science-experiment-gone-wrong mutated versions of them) also appear.

As such, they’re a great choice to add to your movie lolly bowl.

Looking for some more wacky lollies? Our online lolly shop also stocks Trolli Mini Burgers, Pizzas and Hot Dogs that are the perfect fit for this movie’s titular meatballs.

Chocolat (2000)

  • Where to watch it: Stan
  • Best lollies to eat while watching: dark chocolate, foil-wrapped chocolate

Looking for a lolly-themed movie that’s a bit more mature? Need an idea for a low-key date with your S.O? Chocolat is a solid bet!

Starring Judi Dench, Johnny Depp (his second appearance on this list!), and Juliette Binoche, this Academy Award-nominated movie tells a charming, light-hearted love story that’s perfect if you’re looking for something a bit more romantic.

What lollies should you buy online for your upcoming movie night? Why, chocolate of course.

And not just any chocolate, either – the chocolate in this movie is the fancy, artisanal kind – as such, we suggest stocking up on foil-wrapped, Allen’s fantales and dark chocolate!

Wreck-it Ralph (2012)

  • Where to watch it: YouTube, Google Play, Disney+
  • Best lollies to eat while watching: pink lollies, chocolate

While video games might be the focus of this particular flick, it’s worth mentioning that large chunks (a portion of Ralph’s journey from final boss battle to hero takes place in Sugar Rush, a lolly-themed Mario Kart lookalike.)

Not to mention, the rest of it’s so colourful (and not to mention plain old fun) that we felt like we couldn’t get away with excluding it from the list!

Sprinkles, chocolate, lollipops – the Sugar Rush parts of this movie have bulk lollies for days. And so can you with our online lolly shop!

If you ask us however, you should absolutely go online and buy pink lollies and swirl lollipops in particular, as these lollies are the perfect match for this movie’s frantic visuals.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)

  • Where to watch it: YouTube, Google Play
  • Best lollies to eat while watching: anything and everything!

Again, not exactly a movie where lollies are the main focus.

However, with the late John Candy in a starring role (alongside the delightful Steve Martin) and its infectious sense of fun, it’s the perfect movie to go with all those lollies you’ve bought online.

Featuring two polar opposites struggling to get back home in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, this movie is fun, light and easily digestible – just like your lollies.

And while we’re on the topic of lollies, what types of sweets should you be chowing down on while this movie plays? Anything, if you ask us – in keeping with the movie’s tone however, we suggest sticking to something sweet like Jelly Babies.

In particular, party mixes are a solid bet in keeping with the frantic pace of this John Hughes film – you never know what you’re going to get, and neither do our protagonists!
