Everything you need (including lollies!) for a child’s birthday party
Planning a birthday party for your kids is a lot of work – especially if you’re new to the whole thing.
Sure, planning a birthday was pretty straightforward while they were still tots – a handful of friends and a cake were more than enough to keep them occupied.
But now they’re getting older, and their expectations for birthday parties are starting to get more, shall we say, elaborate… and now you’re struggling to think of what you can do!
Luckily, that’s what we’re here for.
How do you throw the best kids party ever?
While our specialty may be bulk lollies, our experience working with kids’ birthday parties means that we’ve seen some pretty sweet (pun intended) ideas over the years – ideas that we’re now going to share with you!
1) What should you choose for your party theme?
As any parent knows, a lot of kids go through strong phases, be it chivalrous knights in shining armour, Disney princesses, superheroes, horses – you probably went through a couple of them yourself!
If you’re planning a birthday party, this is an absolute godsend – you’ve got a theme right there, ready to go with decorations, cake ideas, games and more.
But what happens if you don’t have a phase to fall back on? How do you choose a theme then?
What are the most popular party themes?
Luckily for you, we’ve got a whole bunch of tried-and-true party themes ready to go for your child’s birthday party:
Each of these themes are what we like to call “evergreen” – that’s to say, they’re safe bets that the vast majority of kids (including the guests) are going to love.
In some cases, you might not even need a theme – a lot of the time, a bunch of fun games, a delicious cake and (of course) bulk lollies can be all you need to set up a great party.
Just be sure to talk to your children first – after all, it’s their party. Not to mention, they’re the only ones who’ll really be able to tell you what the “best” party theme is!
2) Think about all the gear you’ll need to pull it off
Even the simplest home birthday parties still need quite a bit of stuff to make it all work, especially if you’re planning a themed party.
Some of the things you’ll need to get before the big day are…
Decorations are key in any birthday party – especially a themed one!
The only problem is that birthdays only happen once a year. As a result, most of us don’t exactly keep birthday decorations just lying around the house.
The first thing you need to do after selecting a theme is to prepare decorations.
Whether it’s classic decorations like banners and balloons or theme-specific decorations like skulls, seashells and palm leaves, you’re going to need to arrange decorations early if you want to make sure that you organise these first so that come the big day, everything looks perfect.
Games and activities
So you’ve included a bunch of fun games and activities as part of the party plan.
But what about the items you’ll need for these games?
It’s important that you settle on an activity list early on so that you can start shopping around for the items you’ll need to make them happen.
For example, say one of the games your child wants to include is a game of Twister, or they want a pinata to smash (and then gorge themselves on the lollies within).
Even simpler games might require some additional items – for example, you’re going to need rope to run a three-legged race!
In all of these cases, you’re going to need to get to work, getting your hands on everything you need early on, before the deadlines start getting tight.
Invites might not strike you as a super important part of planning for your child’s birthday party – take our word for it however, it’s a lot bigger than it is for adult parties!
While you might be able to get away with a group text, kids react better to something tangible. Not to mention, a physical invite is sure to drum up some excitement before the big event!
Feeling creative? Why not let your little ones hand-make the invitations? You can then drop them in the mail or hand them out in the schoolyard. Cheap and fun!
4) Food, drinks and snacks
And we aren’t just talking about lollies, either!
What’s a party without food – or worse, a party without lollies?
In addition to allowing you to buy lollies online, there are many other food considerations that parents need to think about when planning a party.
Unfortunately, many of them don’t!
Does your food look as good as it tastes?
Presentation counts. This isn’t us running our mouths – according to some research, there’s a definite link between food appearance and taste. What’s more, this link is even stronger in children!
Bottom line, your food, snacks and drinks need to look the part.
Once you’ve decided on what you’re going to offer, it’s time to put your designer hat on and start thinking about how you’re going to present it.
For example, if you’re planning a lolly buffet, you’ll need candy buffet jars to store them in. At the same time, you’re going to want to ensure that the cake is positioned so that attention is drawn to it.
The celebrations don’t end once the party’s over – you can’t forget to send the guests off with the traditional lolly bag!
And what about all their friends at school? While you might not be able to fit their entire class in your home, that doesn’t mean that you should leave them out of the celebration.
