How to plan an 8th birthday: our top party ideas
There are so many things that an 8-year-old child may often forget, like brushing their teeth, doing their homework, or completing their household chores.
But there’s one thing they certainly WON’T forget about, and that’s their upcoming birthday party!
And just like any other birthday celebration, we know you want everything to turn out as perfect as possible.
Your party needs everything that an 8-year-old child would normally expect, from cakes, sweet treats, presents and of course, fun activities with friends and family.
It might sound daunting, but with a little bit of planning and careful thought (and of course, some help from MyLollies!), we know that you’ll plan a party that every single guest – and the guest of honour, of course – will love!
So, here are our top tips to celebrate your child’s upcoming celebration.
What can you do for your 8-year-old’s birthday party?
We know that every year as your child’s birthday party rolls around, you might feel a bit anxious starting preparations. After all, this is your baby – you want them to have the best time ever!
Besides food, lollies, and music, it’s also a good idea to plan some structured games and activities throughout the afternoon.
While older kids might be content simply hanging out together, 8-year-olds might need a little bit of structure in order to fill their time – and have fun while they’re at it!
Activities don’t have to be complicated- even the simplest thing can turn into a fun celebration! Here are some of our favourite simple activities for your child’s birthday party.
For friends and guests to enjoy your event, you will need to think out of the box of fun and exciting activities as well as the theme that will make everyone happy. Some of these activities include (but are not limited to) the following:
Dance party
No matter what kind of music they’re into, the best (and easiest!) way to get kids moving and having a great time is to throw on a playlist and let the music do the rest of the entertaining!
Get kids to show off their best moves, and hand out mini lolly bags to encourage kids to get their groove on!
Karaoke party
Dancing’s one thing – you can also ask kids to show off their pipes with a sing-along or karaoke session!
To complete the look, you can make your own inexpensive microphones, or if you want to go all out, hire a karaoke machine.
Who knows – you might have the next Spice Girls or Backstreet Boys on your hands!
Sporty theme
If the guest of honour is sporty or a massive sports fan, you can ask attendees to dress up in their favourite sporting uniforms, and include sports games in your party celebrations.
That could be anything as simple as running races or relays, or you could add a fun twist by creating teams and challenging them to unique activities, such as hopping races, three-legged races, or even a potato sack race!
Topples and laughs are sure to ensue!
Cooking and baking
Cooking is a sure-fire way to get children tapping into their crafty side, practice concentration, and feel awesome showing off a final product at the end!
Think cupcakes (which they can then decorate – see below) or homemade pizzas that can be enjoyed afterwards.
Lolly decorating activity
The best way to decorate cupcakes? Lollies, of course!
This fun and creative activity has no rules – let kids’ imaginations run wild as they add everything from sprinkles and candies to bulk chocolate and customised lollies on their cupcakes.
Best of all, they can be enjoyed afterwards or given to each child to take home and show off their creations.

How long should an 8-year-old birthday party be?
The best time to hold a birthday party for 8-year-olds is during the early afternoon.
Two hours is usually plenty of time for kids to have a boogie on the dance floor, enjoy some yummy party food, gorge on lollies, and of course, sing ‘Happy Birthday’!
Children can get bored easily, and anything beyond two hours might result in fidgety, grumpy, or distracted kiddies.
What do 8-year-olds want for their birthday?
How long is a piece of string?
The first step you can take is to speak to the guest of honour’s parents to find out what the child is into. Whether it’s superheroes, mermaids, sport, or pirates.
You can also speak to your own child to find out what games they are playing at school or what’s hot on everyone’s Santa list.
Make everything sweet for your 8-year-old’s birthday party!
Sweeten up your child’s birthday party with lollies!
Want to go all out? Consider a lolly bar or lollipop lolly buffet for everyone to enjoy.
And if you’re planning to include birthday games, you might need to include prizes for children to look forward to.
Our best suggestion is to buy bulk lollies and package them so that you can hand them out as prizes or to all guests to thank them for attending.
The easiest way to do this? Order lolly bags from MyLollies! We’ll do all the work for you – all you need to do is place your order online and wait as our lolly wizards create the perfect mini bag filled with sweet lollies to entice and delight.
